Question:
I noticed that the Napali sea kayaking on Kauai is only in the summer months. We would like to see that coastline as we heard it was spectacular but we are coming in January. Is there a similar trip we can take?
Answer:
The Napali Coast is a very special place. The pali, or cliffs, provide a rugged grandeur of deep, narrow valleys ending abruptly at the sea. Waterfalls and swift flowing streams continue to cut these narrow valleys while the sea carves cliffs at their mouths. Extensive stone walled terraces can still be found on the valley bottoms where Hawaiians once lived and cultivated taro.
The Na Pali coast is a spectacular and not to be missed highlight of any trip to Kauai. In the rougher winter months the small kayaks are not often able to make the trip down the coast past the cliffs because of the large waves. For that reason during this time of year we do not have the kayaking trips available. Instead I would suggest that you explore the option of taking a larger boat on a snorkel trip or sunset sail. In addition to the boats I also recommend considering taking an air tour of the Napali Coast by helicopter or by a fixed wing plane. A helicopter will offer the advantage of being able make tight turns and to hover inside the valleys over the waterfalls. A plane will fly to essentially the same beautiful areas at a much more economical price point.
