Can you keep the fish that you caught on your Maui fishing charter?

Jan 25, 2021 | General Information

When you book a fishing charter on Maui, whether it is deep-sea sport fishing or shallow water bottom fishing, you will get to keep at least a portion of your catch. Every vessel and captain has their own “tag and release” policy. Most, but not all, do encourage the release of smaller bill fish.
In Hawaii, it is common to leave the catch with the captain and crew to help defray the high cost of lost/broken tackle. However, most of the guys will be happy to filet enough fish for you to have a fine fresh fish dinner or two. Often, on a bottom fishing boat, you will go home with the entire catch. Maui has no processing or canning facilities and the airlines have very strict guidelines for shipping fresh/frozen fish. A local fish wholesaler can arrange this for you, however, the surcharge is about $1.00 per pound, excluding shipping. State law prohibits you from selling your sport catch.
