Fleming Beach (D.T. Fleming Beach Park)

May 25, 2018 | General Information

For many people, perhaps the quintessential beach on Maui is Fleming Beach, also known as D.T. Fleming Beach Park. This beach has it all. It spans close to a half-mile along its crescent-shaped coastline and is carpeted with the an incredible white fluffy sand that extends fifty-plus feet from the ocean to the shaded forest line which provides the perfect back-drop to the beach. It is large enough to provide room for everyone on a busy day but is often empty enough that you feel you have the entire beach to yourself.

Fleming Beach is also fortunate enough to have the only life-guard tower and jet-ski lifesaving vehicles north of Kaanapali Beach. The professional life guard staff regularly on duty here perform their lifesaving missions for seven miles up and down the West Maui coastline. Their specially outfitted jet-skis can reach speeds of 60 mph on the high seas and can get to trouble spots quickly. At Fleming Beach however you have the privilege of having these watermen and women based right at your location.

The amenities you’ll find at Fleming Beach are among the best you will find on the island. There are a couple of parking lots in the front and a full service restroom and showers as well. There are also many picnic tables and barbecues nearby.

Use Caution at Fleming Beach
Please be advised that all beaches and ocean locations in Hawaii can be potentially dangerous including this location. Be completely aware of the ocean conditions prior to entering the water and of course, never turn your back on the ocean when you are on the shoreline. It should also be noted that all shorelines and beaches in Hawaii, including this one, can be frequented by sharks, jellyfish and other sea creatures which can provide potential harm to people entering the water.

General Weather Conditions At Fleming Beach
The weather at DT Fleming Beach varies considerably from day to day. Like most beaches in Hawaii, the best time to go is in the morning hours. It is located on the far North West side of Maui and it is not uncommon for the afternoon trade winds to push cloud cover in from the East that can shade Fleming Beach Park from the sun. The surf here is generally small in the summer and much larger in the winter. We advise all beach users to check in with the life guards for an update on the current ocean conditions before entering the water.

How to get to Flemings Beach
To get to the parking lot for Fleming Beach you will need to make a turn off of the Honoapiilani Highway onto the Lower Honoapiilani Highway (at the bottom of the hill from as you’re traveling North through Kapalua). Once inside the park you will find a generous amount of parking surrounding the restrooms and the life guard tower.
