Pohaku Beach Park is located in Kahana just south and within easy view of the high-rise portion of town. This small beach park is often referred to as S-Turns because of the curve in the road that used to be there years ago before it was straightened. It is also the sight of a fairly popular surf break which also goes by the name of S-Turns. Though quite small Pohaku Park is quite nice as it is located along a beautiful section of the coastline. Locals often find their way there for “pau hana” (after work) relaxation as the sunset from this location is quite beautiful. You have an amazing view of Molokai which just seems to be within a finger’s touch of the park (it’s actually eight miles away) and the island of Lanai can be seen off to the south.

Surfing at S-Turns
As of late the sport of paddle boarding has become all the rage in Hawaii and Pohaku park often has the calm ocean necessary to participate in this sport. The more notable type of surfing that S-Turns has been known for however is wave surfing. The waves generated at S-Turns generally arrive in the winter months when the north swells are happening. The wave is located some distance off the shoreline and requires a bit of a paddle to get to the break. The shape of the wave at this location is often shaped like the larger mushier and less sculpted waves that are seen at the famous wave site on Oahu called Makaha, and thus S-Turns is often referred to as “Little Makaha”.

Beach Amenities
Pohaku Beach Park is just off the main shoreline road called Lower Honoapiilani Highway and has suitable parking for a small park. The only bathroom facility is a port-a-toilet. Picnic tables are available there as well as barbecue stations. Fresh water showers would have been a nice touch but unfortunately there are none at the park.

Ocean Caution
Please be advised that all beaches and ocean locations in Hawaii can be potentially dangerous including Pohaku Beach. Be completely aware of the ocean conditions prior to entering the water and of course, never turn your back on the ocean when you are on the shoreline. It should also be noted that all shorelines and beaches in Hawaii, including Pohaku Beach, can be frequented by sharks, jellyfish and other sea creatures which can provide potential harm to people entering the water.
