One of my girlfriends said that I should go out on a sunset sail with my boyfriend and see a ‘green flash’ when the sun goes down. Can I see one from the Big Island?

Answer:
You certainly can off the islands leeward coastline. In order to see a green flash (just as the sun disappears into the water at the last second there will be a green color often associated with a bit of a flash) you have to see the sun set into the ocean. It wont work if you see it set over an island or a mountain. The day also has to be pretty clear. Since the west facing shores of the Big Island only face the sea this is a perfect place to see one.
