Tom’s Tips – Kauai Horseback Rides

Oct 31, 2019 | Activity Information

It is well known that Kauai has some of the most beautiful horses on its horseback rides to be found anywhere in the state. The stables do everything they can to make certain they stay healthy and vibrant. Consequently one of the things they are really careful about monitoring is the weight of the riders. Putting too much weight on a horse that does regular trail rides on a an almost daily basis is not good for the health of the horses. This is why we always ask for the weights of the riders. These stable however don’t just want the weights of the riders but also the height of each person as well This is to get an understanding of the proportional weight applied on each animal. So it is not simply a weight limit over which a rider cannot go but their weight will also be determined by their height as well. Each stable is a little different, but for instance, on some of the stables if you are 5′ 8″ you are not permuted to exceed 190 lbs but if you were 5′ 11″ you would be permitted to be as much as 220 lbs. It does seem to be a bit unfair but believe me, with these folks, their horses come first and they want to make certain they are not putting them through any undue stress.

As far as ages are concerned that is a bit more cut and dry on Kauai. It will usually be either a minimum age of 7 or 8 years old. And by the way, little ones love these rides.
